Coconut Oil Is Better Than Any Toothpaste According To New Study
The Athlone Institute of Technology recently studied the impacts of different natural oils on common bacteria found in the mouth, and coconut oil emerged as the winner.
The Toothpaste of The Future is Enzyme Modified Coconut Oil
It was discovered that when the oil was treated with digestive enzymes, it hinders the growth of bacteria found in the mouth including, S. mutans; an acid-secreting bacteria that is significant in causing tooth decay. In industrialized countries, tooth decay affects 60 to 90 percent of children and adults.
While the oil’s bacteria fighting properties is not a new thing, studies presented at the Society for General Microbiology’s meeting at the University of Warwick, concluded that enzyme-treated coconut oil may prevent Candida albicans, the yeast that causes thrush.
An attractive alternative to chemical additives would be adding enzyme-modified coconut oil to dental hygiene products, especially because relatively low concentrations are needed. With more antibiotics becoming resistant, it is vital that we focus on new methods to fight microbial infection,” said lead researcher Dr Damien Brady, from the Athlone Institute of Technology in the Republic of Ireland.
The outcome of these studies will mean a lot to oral health and the impact of digested products such as coconut oil on our digestive system.
The products of human digestion indicate antimicrobial activity and this could greatly impact how bacteria colonizes the cells lining the digestive tract and for overall abdominal health,” said Dr Brady.
How to Use Coconut Oil For better Oral Health
Ever imagined using coconut oil for oral hygiene? The time is now. There is no fluoride in coconut oil, making it more effective at dental care than ordinary toothpaste or mouth wash.
Oil pulling
Take a spoonful of extra virgin coconut oil and swish in your mouth for 15-20 minutes. Do not swallow the oil as it has germs. Spit it out and then thoroughly rinse your mouth with water.
Recipe for the all-natural tooth
½ cup coconut oil
2-3 tablespoons baking soda
15-30 drops of peppermint essential oil
Blend the ingredients with melted oil. Pour the mixture into a glass jar and let cool. Use the way you use normal tooth paste.
