Medicine today knows a lot about HIV, from who is transmitted, how it looks like the viral life cycle, and can even predict at what point the infected will become ill. But until now it was not clear how HIV “enters” into the cell, and then “jump” from one to another and spreads over the body.

Students from Yale, Gzaver Sivold and Walter Mots, injected the virus in the lymph nodes of a sleeping mouse, then using the photon-laser scanner they were able to capture the moment in which HIV destroys the immune system, killing T lymphocytes.

It turned out that the virus binds to a protein from macrophages (a type of white blood cells in the lymph), key cells which are the first line of defense of the organism.

They hope that this discovery could be of great help to find a definitive cure for this terrible disease. Do not forget to look at the unique microscopic footage that shows how HIV destroys the cell.
