Children Were Dying From Diabetes Until One Injection Changed the World

Due to the discovery of this injection, its inventors received the Nobel Prize in Medicine. Nowadays, it is the only cure for patients diagnosed with diabetes.

On Jan. 11, 1922, at a Toronto General Hospital, Canada, a teenager was suffering the end stages of diabetes. His name was Leonard Thompson and he became the first person who was injected with a newly discovered injection.

The boy’s condition has improved at an incredible rate after undergoing a series of insulin injections. The news about insulin spread around the world like wildfire from then on.

A year later, Frederick Banting and John Macleod, who worked together to produce insulin, received the Nobel Prize in Medicine.

Diabetes is a major public health problem that is approaching epidemic proportions globally. Today, 415 million people live with diabetes worldwide. The most shocking thing is that almost half of the adults with it are not diagnosed and the diabetes is left untreated.
