Have You Ever Wondered What The Crescent Thing On Your Nails Means? It’s Far More Important Than You Think. Here’s Why

This crescent shaped part of the nail is the basis of the nail, but what is its meaning?
This whitish area around your nails is a sensitive and important part of the structure of the nail, which must not be damaged.

So, this whitish structure is known as Lunula (Latin for “little moon”) and it is a really sensitive part of your nail.

The white color of the “crescent” is apparent, because the basal layers of the epidermis “hide” the blood vessels that are under.
It is best seen in your thumbs however, not all lunulae are visible. Sometimes, the cuticles, which are the thick layers of skin around the nails on your feet and hands, can completely or partially cover them.

In fact, lunula is the visible area of the nail root and should not be damaged, since if you damage it your nail will become deformed.

Alternative medicine believes that the lunulae can tell you very important things about your general health. For instance, the traditional Chinese medicine claims that the absence of lunula suggests anemia and malnutrtion, while pale or blue lunulae suggest the possibility of diabetes. If the lunula has red stains, it means that the person may suffer from cardiovascular disease.

Absence of lunula or very small lunula often indicates indigestion that can be caused due to a slow metabolism or a large quantity of poison in your body.
Chinese medical experts still point out that every healthy man needs to have at least seven or eight lunulae on the nails. If you have lunulae only on the thumbs, it means that your kidneys are failing.

The normal nail should be pinkish with slightly arched shape and a clearly visible lunula. The lunula shows how healthy you are. The more energy you have, the lunulae are whiter. Otherwise, they will be darker.

The lunula should cover 1/5 of the nail and it should have sharp, clean edge. If you are sick, your lunulae will show a color change or reduction.
