Tragic Georgia Marrison started suffering from tiredness and persistent vomiting when she was studying for her A-level exams. The college student went to a walk-in centre with her mum but her weight loss was put down to severe anaemia – with one doctor even suggesting it was because she wanted thin. Georgia’s cancer was missed for five months before she was finally diagnosed with an aggressive form of stomach cancer just two months before she died.
For five months, the doctors weren’t able to diagnose her daughter with cancer, claiming that her shocking weight loss is only a result of her desire “to be modern”
When Georgia Marrison (18) got sick and started vomiting every day, she was told that she has a serious form of anemia. Her doctor’s told her mother Joanna that Georgia just wants to be skinny like most girls.
But when Joanne demanded her daughter to be tested for other diseases, her daughter was soon diagnosed with a serious form of stomach cancer. She passed away on the 11th November last year.
Her mother is now leading a campaign for raising awareness of discovering cancer in young people.
“I’m not saying that they could have saved Georgia, since her cancer was very aggressive. But what I’m saying is that she ignored for so many times, just because she was a teenager.”
More and more young people have carcinomas, and if the doctors ignore their warning signs it means that what they’re doing is wrong.
Georgia started to feel very exhausted during May last year. When she noticed that one of her eyes keeps swelling every morning, she went to see a doctor who told her she had anemia.
“Her doctor told her she was very pale and that he knows that young girls want to be very skinny. When she was diagnosed with anemia, she was prescribed medications which didn’t stop her from vomiting. Even though she kept seeing her doctor, her condition only worsened.”
She lost almost 15 kilograms, and she even fainted in one instance. Near the end, she asked her mother why no one believed her she was sick.
She was finally admitted to a hospital in her ninth month, when her doctors diagnosed her with eye and ovary cancer, but she also contracted meningitis, a rare side-effect of cancer.
“Georgia was incredible. She never had any problems with anyone and she always had an exceptional sense of humor” – says her mother.
“When we went to see her doctors we were under the impression that they believe she was just another stupid teenager that wants to be skinny. That’s why I want to warn all the parents whose children have similar symptoms to get their children examinedTop of Form
