According to a lawsuit filed by Lewis Daly of Brooklyn, New York, Quaker Oats contains a carcinogenic substance called glyphosate, which was determined in 2015 to be potentially harmful to humans. Filing a class action in the Federal District Courts of both New York and California, Daly claims that trace amounts of glyphosate were found after testing Quaker Oats Quick 1-Minute product. The suit will seek customer refunds and an insistence that the oatmeal company disclose the use of glyphosate to consumers.
Glyphosate is a popular herbicide used in the treatment of weeds and can be found in many popular weed treatment products, such as Roundup and Ortho. Daly is not claiming that Quaker Oats use of the weed killer is wrong, as much as he contends the company’s claim of their products being 100 % natural are untrue and misleading to their customers.
Quaker Oats, owned by PepsiCo, maintains that their products are grown, harvested, produced and sold all through responsible means. They have claimed that their oats undergo a cleansing process that removes any significant levels of herbicide. In fact, independent testing of Quaker Oat oatmeal has shown the Quick 1-Minute product to contain only four percent of the allowable limit, putting the oatmeal well below the minimum levels accepted by the EPA.
