Dangers Hidden In Breakfast Cereals

Are cereals really a tasty and healthy breakfast as advertisements claim?
Marketing behind the cereal is huge and very persuasive.
Many don’t even know that most manufacturers sell cereal loaded with sugar, artificial colors and preservatives, which is advertised as a healthy option for breakfast.
Besides being bad for children, these products often on the packaging have listed health properties that are misleading.
Manufacturers use bright colors, cartoon characters and action heroes to attract children, which is why they are associated with fun.
This also influences the selection of the favorite tastes. In fact, studies show that children prefer the taste of which on the box is represented a popular cartoon characters.
Cartoon characters are there to attract children, and the inscriptions to found the approval of parents.
But is this marketing responsible for allergies, diabetes, childhood obesity and other related diseases?
Hazards of highly processed grains
Paul Stitt in his book Fighting the Food Giants writes about the harmfulness of extrusion grain.
Extrusion is the process by which grains are treated under high temperature and high pressure, are transformed into tiny flakes and then expand, so they can be eaten without cooking.
But it also destroys their composition.
With this process are generated many types of cereal for breakfast, a kind of pasta, crackers, ready-made snacks, a kind of baby food, textured vegetable proteins, some drinks and dry and semi-dry pet food.
Paul Stitt worked at the factory for flakes and in his book he describes the next study.
The study was conducted on rats that were divided into 4 groups.
The first group ate a complete meal, water, synthetic vitamins and minerals, a second group – extruded cereals, water and the same vitamin supplements, the third group received water and synthetic vitamin supplements, and the fourth only sugar and water.
Results were as follows:
- The group on a complete meal lived for a year.
- The group that received only water and synthetic nutrients lived two months.
- The group on the sugar and water lived for a month.
- The group that received extruded cereals lived only two weeks.
The biggest problem was not in dying animals because of malnutrition, but the results that pointed to the fact that in the extruded cereal is something really toxic.
It is known that extrusion:
- creates sugars tolerant to insulin, which represent a risk factor for diabetes
- simplifies simple sugars that cause tooth decay
- significantly increases the glycemic index food
- destroys vitamin A
- denatures (impoverish and “corrupt”) proteins
Such flakes are also sold in health food stores, partially made from whole grain, low sugar or sweeteners.
But such “integrated” extruded cereals can be much more harmful than products derived from refined flour!
With so many boxes of cereal sold, you would think that someone should point out their harmful effects on humans and animals.
The problem is that the lobby behind their production is incredibly powerful and rich, so that the media hides the negative or harmful information.
Hazardous ingredients in breakfast cereals
Except the way of processing, breakfast cereals can be bad because of the ingredients they contain.
These ingredients may be:
- GMO origin
- pesticides and herbicides
- sugars
- additives
GMO ingredients
GMOs, or genetically modified plants are a monster in the modern diet.
Even at the “most natural” breakfast cereals proved to contain surprisingly high levels of GMO ingredients.
Therefore, it is necessary to buy strictly certified products. Conventional labels “natural” often lead customers astray.
It may be genetically engineered corn, soybeans, rice, sugar beet, and many of these products from plants such as sugar, soybean lecithin, corn syrup.
Toxins in conventional production
All concerns about GMOs are minimal compared to the problems around other toxins.
In the grains may be found toxic and carcinogenic pesticides, herbicides and insecticides.
Many scientific studies show that these toxins are associated with an increased number of cancers, birth defects, allergies, and other nervous disorders, behavioral, hormonal, reproductive, endocrine and immune systems.
Sugars
Added sugars may be the worst component of the modern diet.
They make people obese and unhealthy.
Most people consume too much of them, but it’s not because they sweeten their food, but because they consume sugars in modern processed products.
It is interesting that cereals are among the most popular processed products with the highest sugar content.
In the majority of cereal, sugar is third in the list of ingredients and 50% of calories come from sugar.
Start the day such a meal causes a sudden jump in blood sugar, and increases insulin levels.
A few hours later and levels decrease, causing a craving for sweets and creates a circle of overeating.
Excessive consumption of sugar increases the risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease and cancer.
To make matters worse, the study found that half of tested samples of glucose-fructose syrup contained mercury!
Synthetic vitamins and minerals
At the end of the extrusion process are often added synthetic minerals and vitamins, which in majority are destroyed in the process.
But regardless of this, synthetic supplements are not good for the body because it’s hard to absorb, so it causes more harm than good.
Another downside is the lack of fat that are necessary for the absorption of essential nutrients.
Fats are often advertised as bad, but because of the craze for low-fat products, vitamins and minerals that dissolve in fats can be useful.
Inscriptions on misleading
The flakes are commonly referred to as healthy and on the packaging contain a number of health claims such as:
9 vitamins, low fat, one’s figure, a good start, whole grain…
However, the composition of the back of the packaging clarifies all – most of these flakes contain a minimum proportion of whole grain, are processed and full of sugar. These small amounts of whole grains can not undo the negative effect of the bad ingredients.
The biggest problem is that people believe the claims of the manufacturer. And studies show that false claims are a very successful way to attract customers and persuasion to eat healthy.
What to do?
Choose organic, less processed foods.
It is difficult in today’s modern world, especially when compared the personal income and prices of organic food.
But it is a small price to pay for your health.
To save yourself try to grow food or buy in smaller local manufacturers.
For healthy breakfast try to combine some of these foods:
- oat, barley or any other cereal (which have a mashed beans)
- raw milk and raw milk products
- fresh and dried fruits
- natural juices
- fresh Smoothies
- nuts
- low processed grains and products made from them
- honey
- integral bread
- homemade spreads
- vegetables
- cocoa
- coconut, flax or olive oil
