The virus usually only causes a mild reaction in children and adults, including symptoms such as an itchy rash, fever, while others may be symptomless.
Having identified the virus in the placentas of Brazilian children born with microcephaly, researchers now suspect that the two are somehow linked.
By October 2015, cases of Zika virus had been reported in Colombia, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, Paraguay, Panama, Suriname and Venezuela, and this week in Puerto Rico.
