You Use Them Every Day, But Did You Know They Can Harm Your Skin?

The invention of makeup remover wipes has revolutionized the skin care industry. It’s the most convenient way to clean your face after a long day at work or a long night out. It’s the easiest and fastest way to clean your face in just seconds. But did you know that they are not the healthiest choice for your skin? As a matter of fact they can leave your skin feeling dry, itchy and irritated the very next morning.

We wondered what it is about makeup remover wipes that makes them so bad for our skin. They are the easiest shortcut to proper skin care. They stop us from sleeping with the makeup on when we’re lazy it’s simple and easy and removing the makeup on a regular basis can’t be a bad thing right? No, wrong!
Here’s how skin expert Rachel Nazarian MD from Schweiger Dermatology Group explains. It’s not that they are so bad but the way we use them is completely wrong. The main thing we need to know about these wipes is that they do not replace the old way of removing makeup and it isn’t a substitute for washing our face. We can’t just wipe the makeup off and go to bed; the face needs to be rinsed afterwards. And let’s face it nobody does that.

Makeup remover wipes are filled with chemicals which give them the ability to clean and remove the makeup easily. This means that those chemicals can leave a residue on our skin, which if isn’t rinsed afterwards can irritate the skin. Plus, instead of removing the particles completely they can just smear makeup into the skin and since most of them contain alcohol they can dry you out.

Another thing you should know is that since they can remain on the shelf for 12-18 months they must be packed with high levels of preservatives and anti-bacterial agents to keep them bacteria and fungi free. They do stay fresh, but are these preservatives safe to be left on your skin?
If you are going to use makeup remover wipes it’s important to stick to a couple of crucial rules:
  • Always rinse your face after you’ve cleaned it with the wipes
  • Try not to use wipes around your eyes and the border of your lips because they are especially sensitive skin patches
  • If your skin is dry or combined always apply moisturizer after you wipe your face
  • Watch out for formaldehyde-releasing chemicals used as preservatives, like your standard 2-Bromo-2-Nitropropane-1,3-Diol.
  • Never use fragranced wipes they can irritate the skin additionally
