Once You Read This, You’ll Never Go to Starbucks Again
Starbucks has become a cultural icon ever since it opened its first cafe in Washington. Now, you can barely go for a walk without walking past one or more Starbucks shops. This makes it extremely easy to pop in for a drink when you are feeling a little tired or worn down.
However, Starbucks does not really have your best interests in mind. In fact, by supporting them with your money, you are directly contributing to efforts that go against your beliefs. Learn more about why you should never drink Starbucks again.
HOW STARBUCKS MISLEADS CONSUMERS
If you just look at the surface, it seems like Starbucks is an environmentally-friendly company that wants its customers to have the best products they can. In addition, they pride themselves on using ethically sourced coffee, a goal that they hope to completely fulfill in 2015.
Recently, the company even removed high fructose corn syrup from their drinks.By all appearances, Starbucks is moving toward the same vision of the future that you have. Behind the scenes, however, it is a completely different story.
STARBUCKS AND ITS TIES TO GMO COMPANIES
In the last two years, Starbucks has been one of the biggest financial supporters of efforts to block GMO labeling bills in California and Washington. When Vermont enacted a GMO labeling bill, Starbucks teamed up with GMA to sue the state and send a message to other states that were considering such bills.
Starbucks, in the last two years, has spent over $70 million in the fight against GMO labeling. Do Starbucks executives really believe that you don’t deserve to know what is in your food? Though they preach about sustainability and knowing what’s in your food, their legislative lobbying tells you what their real priorities are.
On top of that, Starbucks uses antibiotic-laced milk from cows who are fed GMOs. Consumers have repeatedly indicated that they would love to see organic milk at Starbucks, and most would even be willing to pay a little extra for organic milk.
However, despite customer feedback, Starbucks continues to use conventional milk that could impact your health for decades to come.
CUTTING OFF STARBUCKS FOR GOOD
By now, it should be obvious to you that Starbucks is no different than any other large corporation: its executives only care about its bottom line. All of the talk about ethical sourcing and healthy ingredients is just there to draw in consumers.
In fact, Starbucks’ real priority is its connections with huge food companies across the nation. Losing the support of these companies would mean a big financial hit for the coffee mogul, so you shouldn’t expect to see Starbucks support GMO labeling anytime soon.
Of course, the biggest thing you can do is boycott Starbucks. When you spend money there, you are donating money to organizations that bully grassroots GMO labeling movements. You can likely find a small local coffee shop that makes your favorite drink and doesn’t leave you with a sense of guilt.
You can also consider signing petitions and participating in movements to encourage Starbucks to change their stance on GMO labeling. With enough consumer pressure, they may yet be convinced.
